Inmarsat BGAN: Voice and Broadband Data
The Inmarsat Broadband Global Area Network
(BGAN) was launched in December 2005.
It is the newest and most powerful Inmarsat service providing data speeds up to 492 kbps and
simultaneous voice and data calling capability. BGAN offers on-demand guaranteed data
rate "streaming IP" services up to 256 kbps, as well as 64 kbps ISDN circuit-switched data for
backwards compatibility with older GAN applications.
Prepaid and postpaid service is available, with a variety of "budget-control" features. Our Light
Usage plan offers
$0.99/minute basic rate voice services worldwide.
The land portable terminals needed to support BGAN are unprecedented in their small size and weight.
Three classes of BGAN terminal are currently available, weighing as little as 2.2 lbs. An older
variant of the BGAN service called RBGAN offers extremely low terminal cost if 144 kpbs data-only
shared-bandwidth service is adequate.
Inmarsat BGAN services cover a large percentage of earth's land masses and certain ocean regions (see

provide a portable satellite terminal with 64 kbps ISDN capability.
The Nera World Communicator
gives you ISDN functionality
via satellite with coverage in most of the world.
Low cost Mini-M voice, high quality 3.1 khz audio and
64 kbps data are supported. Two terminals can be multiplexed to produce
128,000 bps data rate or for use with specialized equipment such as
VideoPhones.
Nera also produces an Inmarsat Mini-M Land Portable terminal (specs
below), Mini-M and high speed data F77 Marine terminals terminals,
and Inmarsat-B.

Thrane & Thrane Inmarsat Terminals
The newest Thrane & Thrane terminal is the Explorer 500 which is a
compact Class II
BGAN terminal capable of
providing up to 464down/448up kbps data.
BGAN offers simultaneous voice and data capability so you don't have to get off the
internet to make or receive a voice call.
The Thrane & Thrane Capsat Messenger Inmarsat M4 terminal
provides voice, 3.1 kHz audio (suitable for 14.4 kbps faxing using a standard fax machine) and 64 kbps
(ISDN) data/internet access.
Thrane & Thrane's Capsat Messenger comes in a small dish, a big dish (roof mountable), and a trifold
antenna design (smallest and most portable, shown here).
If you don't need high speed data, the Thrane & Thrane
Capsat Inmarsat Mini-M terminal will give you
voice, fax, and 2400 bps data. A ruggedized all-Magnesium case and
a tough all-weather patch antenna make this unit a truly all-weather product.

Globalstar Satellite Phones
The GSP-1600 by Qualcomm is the most economical
handheld satellite phone for most applications in North America, both in terms of
airtime costs and initial hardware cost. The GSP-1600 is
a favorite of hikers and hunters visiting
remote locations that need to carry a method of calling the outside world. During the Hurricane Katrina
disaster when terrestrial communications were down, Globalstar played a dominant role in helping
emergency responders communicate. Globalstar offers excellent sound quality and a 9600 bps data
rate.
Globalstar offers coverage in North, South and Central America, Russia, Australia, Iraq, Saudi
Arabia, Afghanistan, western Europe and other areas (see coverage map).
Options include a
car kit, a leather belt clip holster,
an internet/data kit (compatible with most Windows and Macintosh platforms),

provide two-wire interfaces

Thuraya Dual-Mode Satellite/GSM Phones
The dual-mode satellite/GSM Thuraya HNS-7101 phone made by Hughes provides voice, fax, and internet
access. The satellite mode covers over 100 countries in a large
region covering much of northern, central and western Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and the
Indian Subcontinent. Internationally roaming GSM cellular coverage capability is also available
(see GSM coverage list).
Options include a
hands-free kit, Car Kit,
Fixed Docking Unit with external antenna,
